Oh David by David Shannon

I have two books by David Shannon both about a little boy named David. I love these books. They represent how silly kids can be and some of the classic stuff they do (of course we can laugh about it now). David is a typical little boy who gets into everything and has a hard time listening. In this one David gets a stinky diaper (who hasn't been there?), won't hold still to get his pajamas on and when he finally gets them on he won't go to sleep. The best part about the David books is that no matter what happens in the book at the very end his mother tells him she loves him. The underlying theme is that no matter what you do moms will always love you. Now I do have to make one comment, as much as I love these books my husband is not a huge fan. He thinks the art work is lacking.

Starfall

Since it's been a while and I can't remember if I've talked about it before but starfall.com is a great website for kids. Right now I'm typing this while my daughter watches some of the videos. This website has fun activities to help your child learn their ABC's and walks the kids through learning how to read. My daughter is 20 months old and already loves this website and I feel good with her watching it since it's educational. I have to put a limit on how long we stay on and when it's time to go she usually throws a fit. She has already been able to identify O!

Olivia's Opposites by Ian Falconer

I think that I've already written about this book and wrote that I didn't really think it was great. Apparently to an adult this book was just ordinary but to a 20 month old it's the best thing since solid food. She has actually picked up words from this book, which is impressive. One of the opposites are quiet and loud. When I read the books to her I use voice inflection, now when I pull out the book she instantly says quiet (quietly of course) and then yells loud. Which is very endearing, unless it's in the middle of church. She also has learned the words open, coming, and going. The pictures are simplistic but they express the words very well. Children should learn from this book.

I just reread my last post on this book. I said that I wouldn't buy another one of Olivia's books but based on my child's love of Olivia I most likely will buy another one. (Funny how kids change our view on things) I also said that it would help children with their vocabulary, ironically I got to see this happen first hand.

A While

Sorry, it's been a while. I'm going to write more reviews on books. I found a lot that I love and that my daughter loves as well. Hopefully you'll enjoy them too.

The Thanksgiving Surprise by Peggy Archer

Here's another book with two names. It was originally published as Turkey Surprise but is not called The Thanksgiving Surprise. Two pilgrims go on a hunt to bring home the Thanksgiving turkey. The only problem is, Little Pilgrim Brother doesn't want turkey. He's sick of having turkey for Thanksgiving. When he sees the turkey on their hunt he pretends he doesn't see it. The turkey doesn't get eaten for Thanksgiving due to the the persuasive manner of Little Pilgrim Brother. The pilgrims go vegetarian for Thanksgiving instead!

sixteen runaway pumpkins by Dianne Ochiltree

This book is about a raccoon who collects pumpkins from the garden. He's doing great until he hits a bump and then he looses them. They roll down the hill and into Grandpa's kitchen, splat. The pumpkins have made a huge mess. Grandpa's not worried though, he decides to make pumpkin pie. This book helps kids to count!

A Silly Snowy Day or Ridiculous by Michael Coleman

My book is called A Silly Snowy Day but the one I found on the web is called Ridiculous so either name probably works. I found more hits on Ridiculous than Silly Snowy Day and after thinking about it Ridiculous makes a lot more sense than the other title. Shelly is a turtle who wants to experience winter but her parents tell her that is. . . ridiculous. Shelly doesn't believe them and adventures outside anyway and every creature she meets in the enchanted snowy land tells her the same thing. . . ridiculous. (See how Ridiculous makes a lot more sense?) She finally determines that everyone is right and goes back home in a unintentional high flying way. Since some of you might be heading into winter and snow this might be a good way to talk about seasons and hibernation, not only for bears.
